The Himalaya

The Himalayas range of Mountain is the greatest heritage of the world with its picturesque scene and serenity. They are storehouses of biodiversity and natural resources, due to which life has sustained in the mountains and the plains for centuries. This mountain is the source of the largest river system and basins in the world that have sources. It's 9000 plus glaciers and high altitude lake store about 12000 kms of fresh water. About1, 200,00 million of water flow from its rivers ever year, which sustains the great Indo-Genetic alluvial plains providing food for the rest of the country. The dense forests of this region have been able to reduce carbon emissions by over 20%, a key factor in mitigating and controlling climate change. The Himalayan region contains states of diverse cultures and communities whose lives and livelihood are intricately woven with these mountains.

The Himalayan Mountain is significant for all the major religions of the word. The Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh and other religious sects regard the mountain as the most sacred place from their spiritual perspective

The Himalayan ecosystem is fragile and diverse. It includes over 51 million people who practice hill agriculture and remains vulnerable The Himalayan ecosystem is vital to the ecological security of the Indian landmass, through providing forest cover, feeding perennial rivers that are the source of drinking water, irrigation, and hydropower, conserving biodiversity, providing a rich base for high value agriculture, and spectacular landscapes for sustainable tourism.

The Himalayan eco system is vulnerable and susceptible to the impacts and consequences of a) changes on account of natural causes, b) climate change resulting from anthropogenic emissions and c) developmental paradigms of the modern society.

The Himalayas house one of the largest resources of snow and ice and its glaciers which form a source of fresh water for the perennial rivers such as the Indus, the Ganga, and the Brahmaputra. Glacial melt may impact their long-term lean-season flows, with adverse impacts on the economy in terms of water availability and hydropower generation. Recession of Himalayan glaciers will pose a major danger to the country. Currently available data gathered by multiples of institutions without a coordinated effort do not indicate systematic trends of recession of Himalayan glaciers
